I Hired Someone to Come Help Me Each Day
My husband passed away just five years ago. Before that happened, I care for him myself and I enjoyed doing so. It was during that time that I saw a glimpse of what might be in the future. Not having any kids of my own, I wondered who would take care of me if I ever needed it. I spoke to a social worker who told me that I could take comfort in the fact that senior home care in Queens exists, and if I ever needed it, I could hire someone to come help me.
By the time I reached my 82nd birthday, I realized that I was having trouble with remembering things. Being forgetful from time to time when you are very young is typically not a problem. But when you are older, you will often need to take medications, go to a variety of doctor appointments, visit stores to get food and other things handled during safer, daylight hours and more. I would sometimes go a whole day with forgetting to take important prescription meds or forget that I needed to go to the store until it was too late for me to go. I would then end up not having any food until the next day.
I knew that I needed help, so I look for a company that could offer me an in-home companion to come help me. I let them know what I needed help with, and then they sent over 4 different employees for me to interview. I ended up choosing a woman who was about 50 years old, so I figured we would have a lot in common. She was kind and gentle, and had about 20 years of experience. Best of all, she had two small children. I told her that I would love it if she would bring them at times to liven my place up. I hired her on the spot, and we have become good friends.
